Yor Yak Hostel: What are hostels?

Have the best life out there by knowing what hostels are. Learn all you can when you read about it here at Yor Yak Hostel. The facts about hostels that you need to know are the following:

Hostels come in many different forms. Some are fancy, others are down and dirty. But no matter how they are, all hostels share these characteristics: They are cheap! A typical hostel in a major city will cost less than $30 per night. If you want luxury, you can pay much more. But for the most part, you will be getting what you pay for. Don’t expect 5-star comfort where 4-star is more than adequate. You get what you pay for. They are centrally located! This means that if you are into nightlife, you won’t have to go far to find it. Just remember, once you leave the central area of the city, things can get pretty dismal. By and large, once you’re out in the sticks, finding fun will require some effort on your part. They are safe! I think this is true of almost any type of lodging. But I would like to emphasize how true it is of hostels. There is a myth out there that you will get robbed at a hostel. That just isn’t true. In fact, in my experience, the opposite is usually true. Hostels are often safer than hotels or regular motels.

First, there are many different types of hostels. Here are the most common types: Budget, cheap and cheerful These are the cheapest hostels. They might not have a pool or a restaurant but they usually do offer beds for $1 or less per night. Plus, they often include free breakfasts. Don’t confuse these with youth hostels. Youth hostels are a lot more expensive but they also have a lot more requirements. For example, you have to be younger than 30 to stay at a youth hostel, there are certain hours you must keep, etc. Regular hostels offer a more homey feel to them. Besides budget, cheap and cheerful, there are a number of other types: Continental European-style hotels Chain hotels that are clean and modern But, you won’t find any palm trees or beachfront here. These are the kinds of places people like to visit who want the comfort of a nice hotel without having to pay the full price. Don’t confuse them with cheap and cheerful either. Those places might have air conditioning and a pool, but they will also have a sleazier atmosphere. Hostels in Europe, Japan, China, Australia and a few other countries are a mixture of the different types.

Second, they are cheap! Hostels cost less than hotels. In some cases, a lot less. You can often get a dorm bed for as little as $12 per night. Even a private room will only set you back $20 or $30 per night. Compare that to anywhere from $200 to $800 or more that you would have to pay if you were to stay in a hotel of similar quality.

Another thing you should know is, most hostels have a common area where people can socialize and make new friends. This is often called the “common room.” You will usually find free internet access here too. If you are into sports, the hostel often has a pool table, a ping pong table, a large-screen TV, or even a fully equipped gym.
